Sizing your scooter for freestyle or recreation

Sizing your scooter!

Sizing your scooter is important not only for comfort but for safety!

For correct comfortable and safe control, the formula is still the same, your scooter bar height needs to be set at just on top of hip height! your arms slightly bent with your back should be reasonably straight and not leaning bent forward.

So unless you have a fantasy with dental or doctor visits please measure from hips down to the ground to confirm bar height, ampro will usually size bars at no extra cost!

In regards to bar width for trick scooters, the ideal width needs to be set the same as a bicycle set-up, that is the width should be set to the rider’s shoulder width.

Skate cushions how they work

Skate cushions how they work

Skate cushions how they work

Skate cushions how they work

Skate cushions have a real job ahead of them by increasing traction softening your ride plus maximise your mobility.

The default cushions on skateboards and roller skates are really hard as in 98 to 100a this is because beginners have to lean balance before leaning mobility this is why every manufacturer starts off with hard stiff cushions and when the rider becomes more instantaneous in handling wheels under there feet this is the time to increase your mobility.

Most brand cushions come in 4 hardnesses so what is the right cushion hardness to choose simple rule of thumb is to choose a cushion hardness durometer to the rider’s body weight and yes this is as close as might be right.

Going too soft could be too responsive or too hard and you reduce wheel traction when turning it really is a personal preference.

The reason you gain traction with softer cushions is when leaning into a left turn for example softer cushions flex more and you don’t tend to lift the right wheel off the ground whereas hard cushions don’t flex as much causing less traction.

Free shipping controversy

Free shipping controversy

Free shipping controversy is really a big issue with ampro skates the fact is any honest legitimate business with an ABN will not charge you freight ever as the freight cost is refunded to the business every financial year in fact if the business is charging freight as they will claim that cost from the tax office that is doubling up on the freight which is actually defrauding the tax office.

It is also against Australian law to advertise prices on Australian websites to not include all up costs.

With overseas websites, we have confused customers when opening their phones and showing us cheaper prices from other websites unaware that there pricing claim is not complete and does not show freight import duty or GST .

Once you got to the trouble of checking out the real cost it will usually be higher than Australian prices.

Buyers be aware of this practice.

So when purchasing a product or service you always need to compare the all up costs when comparing prices if they charge extra  freight post or any other eligid fee  it’s because their price to you is not feasible and there adding a so called freight charge to make up the loss in profit.

ampro skates setting the pace

ampro skates setting the pace

ampro skates setting the pace

ampro skates setting the pace in the skating or skate park scooter industry since 2015 as many stores are closing down or desperately dumping stock to stay alive.

Here at ampro skates we believe the reason for our steady increase in sales is due to our customer service free labour and free express freight policy

Not to forget our pricing policy of low prices everyday it is better than up and down sales every few weeks and logically if you  have to sell stock for no margin why not sell at low price all the time you will keep your customers from getting upset .

Back in 2015, we carried 50 scooters in stock and around 60 pairs of skates now we stock up to 400 scooters and 250 pairs of skates at all times this defiantly was not our plan but due to customers wanting more range and better service, this is where we are today.

Correct sizing of plates

Correct sizing of plates

Correct sizing of plates

Correct sizing of plates is critical for the best balance and control of course many people have their own personal ideas but if you are a regular skater or a beginner the best setup is shown below, the rear plate axle should line up through the center of your leg just in front of your heal to the center of your foot, the front axle to the middle of the ball of your foot.

To order plates if building your own skates after finding adiquate shoes with a stiff base measure from centre to centre of the axle centres this will be correct for you, the total length of the plate is not relevant axle spacing range from 140 to over 200 mm in 5 mm increments.

Bearing spacers why we need them ???

Bearing spacers why do we need them ???

Whether your a pro or a beginer skater your skate gear needs to function correctly fact is if your skate gear is not correct it is more difficult to skate.

Bearing spacers are extremely important to take side load off your bearings and at the same time allowing you to quickly and properly tighten the wheel nuts to correct firm tension, and still maintain 100% a free-spinning roll with no axle chatter.

The exact size of spacers is the most important within .25 of a millimetre to get the perfect roll, If the spacer is too small the axle nuts would need to be loose to enable free rolling it would be the same effect as no spacers at all, too big would push the bearing out of the inner seat causing the wheel to move the gap distance of the bearing out of seat making a clicking noise.

To round up the

  1. The bearing should be snug into the wheel seat
  2. The spacer size should be exactly the gap distance of the two bearings centres
  3. You should be able to tighten wheel nuts firm with 100% free rolling bearings with no sloppy movement in the wheel.
  4. Remember the higher the ABEC the lower the tolerance which means the bearing is more snug into its own casing yet has very little slop in its own casing, but do not misunderstand what ABEC is it is a rating for machining accuracy, whether you run ABEC 1 or 9 will not change how fast you will roll the only advantage of a higher ABEC, in theory, is the bearing should roll smoother, and without too much confusion there are bearing manufacturers these days who prefer not to use the ABEC rating but prefer to use skate rated bearings as more attention to sideload rather than trying to go at impossible speeds.
  5. Side load generated by G forces on the sides of the bearings it what causes more bearing failure than any other situation, this gets back to the reason for bearing spacers as spacers help align the bearing to reduce side load pressure.
  6.  On top of that, the only way to run without spacers is to rely on the nylon thread lock which means have loosened nuts that could cause you injury when your wheels fall off.

Bearing spacers are extremely important to take side load off your bearings

We do see many customers who have been misled thinking that their wheels should spin for an exact amount of minutes and seconds and to achieve this it would be ok to have loose wheel nuts no spacers.

This, in fact, will cause premature wear, bearing chatter, or bearing lock possible damage to the axles, plus your wheels could vibrate off possibly causing injury to the user,

All bearings fit into a recess and the gap between the two recess points this is your exact spacer width thus allowing you to tighten the retaining nut nice and firm putting absolutely no pressure on the side of the bearings allowing the bearing 100% free spinning.

One thing to remember new bearings that are pre-lubricated will take a few days to run freely,  the higher the abec the higher tolerances as in smoothness and firmness of the bearing, plus the higher the abec does not mean will spin faster, in fact, abec one or abec eleven can all do the same revolutions per minute but the higher abec due to there higher quality will run cooler and smoother as the machining tolerances are more exact.

Titanium Bars pros/cons

Titanium  bars pros/cons

Titanium  bars

Titanium  bars

Many customers ask about the advantages or disadvantages of titanium bars, well it’s really quite simple titanium bars are more ridged than heat-treated chromolisium bars yet approximately  100 grams lighter than heat-treated 6061 alloy bars. and are the lightest weight metal component known today,  but because the bars are extremely rigid with no flex you will get a very hard ride, with a much bigger risk of breaking plus they are expensive to manufacture and are actually weaker than alloy bars, so the only advantage titanium bars have is the weight. titanium is not a new product it was used in the bicycle industry in pro-level racing during the 1970 to 1980 era and because of all the issues with titanium, it is no longer used.

So if you are of heavy build over 80 kg or the kind of rider who tends to bend or break bars due to your riding style,

you might want to stick to oversized chromolisium bars.

PS Please note all scooter Titanium bars on the market have a large percentage of chrome moly  in in mix pure titanium bars would snap like an old carrot

After 40-plus years in mechanical engineering we can assure you that our comments are not of a bios nature and are not trying to sway or sell any products with this post we are just forwarding information on knowledge experienced.
